Great Build Quality - Strong joints, tough sturdy plastics, good passive noise reduction, excellent active noise reduction
Sound - Boxed in feel without active noise reduction, sound somewhat thins out with active noise reduction (esp. low freq), active sound processing bypass switch is not perfect (clicking sound with battery in and active noise reduction off- workaround is to take the battery out)
Comfort - EXCELLENT, 9 oz never felt so light
Accessories - All I require with gold plated plugs (1 for airplane, 1 for sound system, 1 for mp3 player), case seems to be made out of some sort of lightweight plastic wrapped in rugged cloth (I expected leather).
Overall - not for the audiophile but great headphones nonetheless especially if you require active noise cancellation (the best I think). These headphones are for those who dont like the "canal" earphone with noise reduction (although a few earphones are better at noise reduction than these).
These are absolutely the most comfortable, best made, best sounding noise-cancelling headphones on the planet. I listen to my iPods a lot, and take a few long airline flights a year...but the stock iPod earbuds are terrible in terms of sound. So, I bought Shure and M-Audio earbuds, which are fantastic in terms of sound and isolation from external sound(i.e. airplane engines)...but, they hurt my ear canals after 30 minutes or so. So, I bought a pair of Sony noise-reduction headphones...they worked pretty well, but they are flimsy, and they sit on the ear, not around it. Next, a trip to the Apple store to try out the BOSE units (QC2 and QC3)...I actually preferred the QC2 sound and comfort to the QC3, although I felt that it was more flimsy...this was due to the fact that the QC2 goes around the whole ear, wheras the more expensive QC3 sits on the ear itself.
Which brought me to the Sennheiser PXC 450...I usually don't buy stuff untried, but a LOT of internet searching led me to believe that this is the best pair of NR earphones on the planet. Well, I was definitely NOT dissappointed...in a nutshell, WOW. Pricey, but definitely worth every penny, especially with the low price that I got on Amazon.com. The bass response is really excellant, but not boomy...the high end is smooth and strong without being shrill...and the response seems to be pretty flat to my ears (meaning that you can EQ to your hearts content...the iPods are really good about that). And they are comfortable for HOURS on end (I just wore them for 3 hours straight with no discomfort whatsoever). They will also work when the battery goes dead sans the N.R. (something the QC3 will not do), and they have a button on the end which allows you to hear outside conversation from your wife, the flight attendant, etc...very cool. And finally, they are made like a expensive headphone...a thick cord, not the flimsy thin cord of the Sonys/Boses. TRES COOL !!
Finally, I decided to go back to the Apple store, and A/B my new Sennheiser with the Bose QC2 and QC3. Overall, I thought that the QC2 came close soundwise, but was lacking in the midrange slightly compared to the Sennheiser. Perhaps due to the fit on the ear, I felt that the QC3 didn't come close...the noise reduction didn't work nearly as well in that noisy store. I came away from the store convinced absolutely that I made the right choice.
So, in conclusion, if you don't mind spending a little more, go with the Sennheiser PXC 450...you sure won't regret it, especially if you are a audiophile like me (actually, a musician). If money is a deciding factor, check out the Bose QC2...it also gives excellant sound, albeit being more inexpensively made as well. ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND, THOUGH...for some odd reason, I found that the Sennheiser could be purchased on Amazon.com or eBay with a better discount than the Bose...so I didn't pay that much more for the Sennheiser...very strange.
Sennheiser PXC 450...listen to the best !!
In a nutshell, you get what you pay for. The trophy has been passed and Sennheiser has taken the lead from Bose in the realm of noise canceling headphones.
A few years ago I purchased a set of the Bose Quiet Comfort. Those worked very well until the shoddy Bose quality led them to start generating a loud vibration. This happened just outside of warranty despite being well cared for and infrequently used.
In the interim I tried a variety of less expensive alternatives. Those were all OK but still far from the Bose (when they worked). I also tried out an expensive Sony set but was not impressed. I thus decided to give the PXC 450 a shot and could not be happier.
Noise cancelling is as good or better than the Bose. I guess you really do get what you paid for. The pass through feature is very handy as well.
Sound quality is better than the Bose. Music simply sounds cleaner and less processed. Comfort gets an A+ as well.
Time will tell, but these seem to be much better constructed than the Bose. They are a little bulkier but fold up well in their case. If you travel once a year to see Grandma, then these are probably overkill, just pick up a $50 alternative. If you are a frequent flyer, these are well worth the investment. If you are considering the QuietComfort, be sure to give these a try first.
I am very pleased with this purchase. I like the volume controls on the headsets and the center button that allows one to switch-off the noise-cancelling function to communicate with others. The noise cancelling feature is much improved over my old Panasonic RP-HC300 headphones. The headphones are also very light and well-cushioned. I never noticed them even on a long 10-hour flight.
My first impression with this headphone was one of diassapointment. I had just received my 450s as a gift and was expecting superior audio quality to that of my former sennheiser cx-300s. Upon listening to some audio on my ipod touch i found that the 450s lacked the crisp and detailed sound that the cx 300s had and that many of the frequencies sounded muddy. I planned on using my normal cx300s but faith intervened and i left them by my freinds house leaving me with my 450s as my only audiophile headphone. a week or so passed and i forcefully learned to accept to appreciate my 450s. then the day came when i decieded to run the headphones on my computer system which is equipped with a sound blaster xfi extreme sound card. my impressions of this device instantly changed. never on a headphone have i ever experienced such crisp, detailed, resonating, full bodied, transient, responsive and toned sound. upper and lower frequency extremities tapered off gradually and gracefully and i could not possibly describe the device of brightening any of the freqency ranges. noise attenuation on bypass mode is second to none and on electronic noise cancellation it is even better. i did however notice some very slight electronic interference and frequency bundling when the noiseguard was on. the headphone is also very comfortable to wear and surprising lightweight. yet it does hurt after wearing it for a while if you have big ears like me.Also be prepared to take the headphones off every once in a while to wipe the sweat accumulating on your ear lobes! This device is indeed clumsy to walk around with in public, but if you want to enjoy music and have sometime for yourself or frag some games and get true audiophile sound, this is for you. the one major complaint i have about this device is that the bass response is somewhat dissapointing when compared to that of my cx300 in terms of low frequency extension--- not response or accuray though. Regardless this is an excellent product that is definately worth the money and comes from a reputable brand of headphone manufacturers.
I have heard better headphones....they exist. But I have never heard the music sound better when Im driving my tractor wearing my Sennheiser PXC 450's !!! Altogether very impressive . Comfortable and they do knock back any background noise considerably . As for a comparison with Bose...when did Bose ever make a hi- fi product ? Er never ! |
I purchased these headphones today for travelling & using around the home, as shortly I will be flying UK to Australia for a holiday & needed something to help endure the journey. So I did some research on the internet, & found that the Sennheiser PXC 450 came out on top. Tried them out & 5 star quality perfect sound quality along with being solidly built. I connected Sennheiser PXC 450 headphones to my Sony NWZ-A818 to enjoy listening to Dire Straits Brothers in Arms in sheer perfection & tranquility, as well as Kevin B****Y Wilson as I enjoy a good old fashioned laugh as well. I also love the talk through mode so you can listen to your favourite albums & talk to people directly at the same time. The headphones also have noisegard which really reduces background noise such as aircraft engines other peoples babies crying talking etc, I tried these out at home & I live within walking distance of the M1 & M25 & with everyday noises around the house these noises where greatly reduced with these headphones. The Sennheiser PXC 450 also has a detachable cable so the Sennheiser PXC 450 can also be used as hearing protectors, only requires 1 AAA battery but 2 are supplied great for long haul flights. The Sennheiser PXC 450 also comes with 1 x 6.3mm stereo jack, 1 x in-flight (2 x 3.5mm mono jack & carry case. My only gripe is that the headphones are a little on the big side but this easily offset with superb sound quality so I am still giving the Sennheiser PXC 450 10/10. |
If you work in noisy office next to busy road and with lots of noisy computers and noisy people and you work requires concentration - these are headphones for you. If you usually listen to your favourite music while working you already know that wearing headphones few hours a day makes you a bit tired - Sennheiser PXC 450 solves this problem. Noise cancelling doesn't cancel everything, don't expect any miracles but with these headphones you can listen to the music with much lower volume without being distracted even by somebody next to you shouting on the phone. The sound is maybe a little bit to warm but this is just my personal preferences, apart from that sound quality is very good, not as good as eg. Sennheiser HD 580 but PXC 450 are not studio headphones. Battery life is too short, but if you use rechargeable cells it shouldn't be a problem. Even if battery goes flat simple switch to bypass mode and use as normal headphones. I have got these headphones for about 3 months and now I cannot imagine working without it, these headphones become an essential tool like good quality PC display or chair which doesn't give me pain in my back. Since I got these headphones I come back home from work more relaxed and not as tired as before. |
Hey!! Man got my Sennheiser PXC450 really comfortable to wear beautiful smooth rich sound, like the travel pack that comes with it handy when your on the move.Happy with speed of the order got them within four days overall excellent headphones excellent service thanks. |
I fly long routes and was mostly happy with my pxc250, but not entirely happy. After reading the reviews on pxc450 it was a bit of mixed feelings, in view of rather high price. Having a good overall experience with Sennheiser (also in possession of HD590, and my kids of pmx60 and pmx200), and reading dozens of reviews on pxc450 (good and less good), I decided to take a risk. It paid off (for some 185 pounds)!!! To help others on their choice, I compiled a small questionnaire: 1. You are a frequent traveller? 2. You like to listen music? 3. You appreciate the difference between Bach and 50 cent, or more close: between Sting and Boney M, or more radical: between Tom Waits and Johann Strauss? If any of these questions is answered as 'No', you should not go for pxc450, for one simple reason: you will not understand why are they so expensive. They are made to enjoy music while you travel and for some sorts of music, such as rap, disco, techno, punk, or similar crap (my view), you will not observe the difference with a cheaper set. If you are a fan of classical music, world music, jazz, and some forms of pop and rock music (basically more than three chords), there comes question 4: 4. You have any experience with Sennheiser sound? If this question is also answered as 'Yes', you should not think much if your budget allows: just go for pxc450. No disappointment is possible. If the answer here is 'No', test them and compare with other models and than see if they are worth their money, in your own judgement. I was using pxc450 on 6.5 hour flights (both day and night) and could confirm what some other reviewers already mentioned: 1. Very comfortable: once you put them on, you do not need to remove them until the landing, even if you go to the toilet (do not forget to unplug the cable!). If you would however decide to remove them, you just become scared to learn what the cabin noise really is. 2. Nice sound: Although they are not a very top class audiophile headphones, they resemble a feeling that you enjoy the music sitting quietly at your home, which in itself is a very good result given the quality of the music source in public transport. During listening in a plane, you see the people around but you do not hear them; it is your own world and your favourite music. No screaming of babies, no boring introduction of your neighbour (who you will meet never again). You just press the talk-through button to communicate with the people you really want to hear (cabin personnel). Not to confuse you about my first remark on the sound quality: I enjoyed it enough to listen the music all the time rather than to watch the video programme. 3. Noise cancelling: Very good. A low frequency tiny roar, while they are silent; if you turn the music on, the cabin noise disappears almost completely. 4. Is the price difference between pxc350 and pxc450 justified? I would say 'Yes'. Not only that pxc450 has a very useful talk-through button, they are also more comfortable and more beautiful. Finally, a few criticisms that were worrying me while reading the reviews of others: 1. They are too bulky: Yes they are, but they are very light. Once folded, the pouch is anything between A5 and A4 size, and adds some 300-400 gram to your hand luggage. For the benefits they offer, I see no big problem here. 2. The head support in the seats of the new-generation planes can be folded but not if you wear pxc450. Only partly true. First of all, if you wear them your head will be fixed by the headphones alone, so basically no need to fold the seat header. Your ears will be nicely packed (unless you are an elephant!) and you won't feel much of the pressure. You turn the sound level a bit down and you can sleep. 3. The bass is a bit weak: The sound is typical Sennheiser, hence very good for good music (see above). What at the end could be considered as the only draw back is that once you put them on, other passengers start fixing you like you are a zombie, but that is basically not your problem. Secondly, I observed that the noise cancelling function relies on a very sensitive microphone, so depending on the position of your seat and even your head, minor variations in noise cancelling can be felt. You mostly solve this by moving your head for a few degrees. All in all: utterly pleased! This is the most favourite piece of my travel kit. I just realise how less tired I become after long flights. |
